End Game

Written by Samuel Beckett

The stretched canvas physicalizes the tension between Clov and Hamm as well as within himself as he thinks about

leaving or not. It is put on a triangular stage to signify the id, ego, and superego that each character represents. The

doorway is always open as the audience feels throughout the play that Clov can leave anytime, but consistently

chooses to deprive himself of what lies outside of the room. Everything is falling apart, broken, feeling hopeless, but

since there are gaps between the canvases, there is a little room for light within the darkness.

Mountain Language

Written by Harold Pinter

Audience will be outside the glass walls of the building, but stuck inside the oppressive gates. Since the play is only one act, they will be standing, waiting in line as the victims of the play are.

Waiting for Godot

Written by Samuel Beckett

This set focuses on repetitiveness, monotony, and moving, but not going anywhere which is shown through the seesaw action of the set. The seesaw

contributes to the absurdity of Vladimir and Estragon’s actions that ultimately lead to nothing. Audience would be seated in the balcony surrounding the

blackbox theater, voyeurs to the character’s mundane lives.

Death of a Salesman

Written by Arthur Miller

The apartments around Willy’s broken home create a feeling of claustrophobia, a fear of falling down. This brings to

life Willy’s fear of his life falling apart. The open floor plan of the house and surrounding apartments make it seem

more memory-like and abstract, while also conveying loneliness. Colorful expressionist projections on the

apartments transport the characters and the audience into Willy’s dreams of success and happiness, but even those

are weighing down on him as they are projected onto the leaning apartments.

MacBeth

Written by William Shakespeare

Set in the 1930’s during the Saint Valentine Day’s Massacre in Chicago. Mirrored panels fracture as MacBeth’s kingdom falls apart, and he gets lost in the

image of himself as king. Movable panels of fire escapes create the changing scenes.
